Our colleagues Lidia Mikhailova and Van Gulinyan talked with reporters from the Saint Petersburg TV channel. As a result, ITMO’s New Physics and Technology Institute and our colleagues’ developments were featured in the program «Petersburg, a City of Solutions», in the episode «Development of Science» (March 12, 2026).
In the episode, our colleagues spoke about a new development, a method of photothermal cancer immunotherapy that makes it possible to control the immune response inside the tumor itself with high precision. The technology is based on light-sensitive microcarriers that release an immunomodulatory drug under laser irradiation strictly in the right place and at the right time. This helps «reprogram» tumor-associated macrophages, immune cells that usually support tumor growth, from «defender» mode to «fighter» mode. The results were published in Biomaterials Advances in the paper «Light-directed reprogramming of tumor-associated macrophages via STING agonist delivery».
